THE ANIMA COLLECTIVE:

Canyon Jones

MR. SMOOTH:

Canyon Jones has been rooted with the Utah bike scene since he took his first pedal. Growing up in Alpine, UT, he was introduced to mountain biking by his dad and later to trail building by his stepdad—both of which played a formative role in his life. Being immersed in the core of the scene at a young age led to a rapid rise in talent, followed by a strong sense of style—something Canyon is well known for, along with his infectious laugh.

As the years went on Canyon's passion to biking grew. Racing, bike parks, freeriding, skate parks were all avenues of the sport Canyon explored and felt comfortable with. This behavior is quite unusual for your "average" rider which leads us to say Canyon is anything but your average rider. This versatility is far from typical for your "average" rider, further proving that Canyon is anything but ordinary. He has a natural talent on two wheels—just ask his friends. We've ridden with him on a handful of occasions, and the number of times we've heard, "How do you make that look so easy?" is high enough that we should have started keeping count.

While talent on a bike is impressive, there's more to life than that, and Canyon agrees. He’s known for being a thoughtful and respectful person—traits we deeply admire. This summer, Canyon embarked on a new project: building the Highland Glen Bike Park in Cedar Hills, UT, which is set to open in a few weeks. During our recent photoshoot, he shared his excitement about giving back to the community and creating a space for the next generation to enjoy.

It’s really that simple—do things the younger you would be proud of.

AUTHENTICITY IS A HOT TOPIC TODAY. HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE IT THROUGH YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES?

I think authenticity is a huge thing in biking and in life. I have found that being authentic to myself hasn’t always been the easiest especially with people being so judgmental and all. I think you should be you no matter what others will think about you.

HOW DO YOU USE YOUR ARTISTIC EXPRESSION TO DEFINE YOU ON AND OFF THE BIKE?

I would like to think that on the bike I express myself by trying to be different in my own way and have a style that’s unique to myself and that separates me. I just want to make biking look easy and appealing to everyone whether they ride or not! Off the bike expression is kind of a similar idea I like clothes and I like style in clothing I think it tells a lot about a person and it’s cool to see all the different style of everyone.I believe in the whole “look good feel good and if you feel good you ride good!”

WHAT'S YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON THE STATE OF THE BIKE INDUSTRY AS IT RELATES TO SELF-EXPRESSION?

The bike industry as a whole right now is in a weird spot with there not being any budget for anything anymore and all of social media being about views. But as for clothing I don’t like how any of it fits and the quality of it all. I want to rep stuff that I want my friends to buy and have it last! I’m just trying to be different without going to far off of what I see in myself as a bike rider and human.

WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT JOINING ANIMA MERX AS AN ATHLETE BRAND AMBASSADOR?

I like to work with local and smaller companies! Makes for a meaningful and fulfilling relationship! I also love what anima stands for and everyone involved get me hyped being on the team! I’m excited about getting to be more involved in the design process and see everything that goes into making a quality product!

WHAT PROJECTS DO YOU HAVE LINED UP IN 2024?

For projects I have been building a bike park a few minutes from my house! Filming wise I just want to put a video part out that I am excited to put out and something I’m proud of! And most of all just want to have fun with my friends while riding bikes!
